Krewe du Vieux parade!

I was in a parade last weekend!! For the second year, I walked with the most anticipated, naughtiest and most creative of all the [major] Mardi Gras parades: Krewe du Vieux! It's the parade/krewe of the French Quarter ("Vieux Carré"), though the members come from all over town. We parade through my neighborhood, the Marigny, and the French Quarter, of course, three weekends before Mardi Gras. All of our floats are pulled by mules or people, and are totally handmade by members, not professionally made like most parades. Our topics are always political and social commentary, with explicit sexual jokes mixed in. A lot of gigantic flacid penises and light up vulvas. The Mother Krewe theme this year was "Krewe du Vieux is Revolting."

My subkrewe - TOKIN (totally orgasmic krewe of intergalacitc n'erdowells) is the "weed" krewe 😆. We picked the theme "Musk, by Elon: the Odor of Oligarchy" well before Elon Musk was one of the hottest topics of the moment, so we chose well. We built a paper mache rocket ship/perfume bottle with a green fog machine to "spray," and a martian background. Black lights and hidden messages were all over the float. We have a bathroom and a few kegs of water and beer and THC drinks on the back of the float. So on Saturday night, all 69 members of our krewe, and the rest of the sub krewes wheeled our floats out of the den and paraded to much fanfare through our neighborhoods! We ended at a ball with djs and bands, and all our floats as the setting.

My friend, Melissa, and I were pregnant robots to compliment the dystopian Musk theme. It was such a fun costume to wear during the parade! People loved the transparent uterus belly with babies inside, and our luminescent baby bottle nipples were also very popular with the crowd. I really enjoyed using creative skills on something outside of Ficus Ceramica! Costume making is so rewarding, because after the brilliant idea, and then all the effort and creative problem solving, you get to wear it out in public, dance around, and get compliments all night!
